The paper dress-up doll was originally part of a series printed on oatmeal packets. By the illustrator, Christel.
The illustrator, Christel
Christel was born in 1919 in the Østerbro district of Copenhagen. After secondary school, Christel started at the Arts and Crafts School. But she only remained there for a short period, because she had already started selling her drawings, which was frowned upon by the school.
When Christel was 15 years old, she got in touch with the then Søndags-BT newspaper (now Søndag) to show her drawings to them. However, initially Søndags-BT would not print her drawings, and it was not until 1938 (in other words, four years later) that Christel had her first drawing published in the weekly newspaper. Søndags-BT and Christel ended up enjoying a lifelong working relationship. Even during the final years of Christel’s life, when she was suffering from breast cancer, she provided drawings for Søndags-BT.
Christel’s drawings and distinctive style were very popular throughout the 1940s, 50s and 60s. In addition to Søndags-BT, her illustrations also featured on oatmeal packets and in the magazine Femina, and graced the walls of many a girl’s bedroom.
